When the Romans borrowed their first calendar from the Greeks it was only 304 days long and was divided into 10 months beginning with March. It is said that January and February were thereafter added by a King of Rome called Numa Pompilius. He made January the eleventh month and February the twelfth. Even though this calendar was more accurate than the old one, it still wasn’t good enough since by the time of Julius Caesar, the dates were three months ahead of the seasons. So Caesar ordered that the calendar be brought to the then up to date and in so doing made January the first month and February the second.

January
This month takes its name from Janus, a Roman god with two heads who guarded doors and gates. It was believed that one of his heads was looking towards the past and the other to the future.

The name February comes from the latin word februarius ,which means to purify. A festival of purification was annually held by the ancient Romans to prepare for the year to come and so, that particular name stuck to the month even after it was moved to to second in calendar.

March
March was named after a god of war called Mars. It is the month of mars because it marks the beginning of the season for war and farming ,two of the most important activities of the Romans.
April
This name comes from the latin word aperire, which means to open. It is in April, after the wind and rain of March that the year really starts to open and you see leaves and early blossom unfolding on the trees.
May
A goddess named Maia gave her name to this month. She was not a very famous goddess but his father was, Atlas. His father was supposed to carry the world on his shoulders.
June
This month was named after the goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter and queen of heaven.
July
Julius Caesar gave his name to this month. This was because initially ,it was the fifth month and at then being the seventh month Caesar realised that it would be silly for this month to have a name like the fifth which was Quintilis.
August
The Romans used to call August Sextilis, the sixth month. But later it didn’t suit it and named it August to honor and flatter their Emperor Augustus.

September
September was the seventh month of the old calendar, when it became the ninth ,the Romans didn’t bother to rename it. Its name comes from septem, meaning seven.
October
Just like september it bears its old name. It means ‘the eighth month’ but it is, the tenth month.

November
November means the ‘ninth month’. This name is also another name from the old calendar that was not altered.
December
To us this month means parties ,toys and more of Christmas. Its meaning is literally, the tenth month. Another month whose name has stuck.
